The city of Seoul and the Seoul Tourism Organization collaborated with the Korean Society of Gastroenterology (Chairman Jinhong Kim) to successfully win the bid to host the World Congress of Gastroenterology “WCOG” 2023 in Seoul. WCOG, to be hosted in Korea for the first time, is a world-class international symposium with roughly 5,000 gastroenterology experts participating from around the world. The conference will be held at COEX for five days from November 15th (WED) to 19th (SUN), 2023.

The city of Seoul, in partnership with the Seoul Tourism Organization, the Korea Tourism Organization, and the Korean Society of Gastroenterology, started the bidding process by submitted a letter of intent to bid and followed up with a proposal late last year. The City of Seoul has taken a strategic approach in the WCOG bid and received WCOG representatives for a site survey in July this year. Korea was neck-and-neck against India and New Zealand. However, at the 17th WCOG in Turkey of Istanbul this past September, Yongchan Lee, Secretary-General of the WCOG bid committee (Professor of Gastroenterology, College of Medicine at Yonsei University) made a presentation bid, and Korea was selected unanimously to host WCOG 2023.

The city of Seoul and the Seoul Tourism Organization offer customized bid support services for international conferences such as bid consulting, letters of support for bidding, bid clinics, and due diligence visits to Seoul, while working together with relevant organizations in strategic bid marketing for successful bids and to host international conferences. Donggi Lee, Chairman of the WCOG bid committee (Professor of Gastroenterology, College of Medicine at Yonsei University), said, “The Korean Society of Gastroenterology will host WCOG 2023 in conjunction with the Korea Digestive Disease Week, KDDW. KDDW is an annual symposium supported by Korean gastroenterology and other related associations. By doing so, we expect to strengthen the networking among gastroenterology associations as well as cementing Korea’s leading position in the US, Europe as well as in Asia.”

Yongtae Ju, Director of the Tourism and Sports Bureau of Seoul City, stated, “According to the World Gastroenterology Organization, Seoul was chosen unanimously based on its locational condition.” He also added, “For a successful WCOG 2023, we will provide financial support for international conferences and integrated visitor services. This, in turn, will help increase the attractiveness and satisfaction of Seoul as a MICE city for attendees of international events in 2023.”
