A River of Light Flows Over Cheonggyecheon: ‘Cheonggye Soul Ocean’ Opens as Seoul’s Newest Nighttime Attraction
The Seoul Tourism Organization (President and CEO, Kil Ki Yon) announced the successful launch of Cheonggye Soul Ocean, a large-scale outdoor media art exhibition, with an opening screening event held on Wednesday, July 23, along the iconic Cheonggyecheon Stream in central Seoul.
The event was graced by Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, who delivered a welcome speech, along with key figures including Jo Tae-sook, Chair of the Seoul Tourism Association. A symbolic ceremony featured the pouring of colorful water into Cheonggyecheon to signify the theme, “The waves of Seoul become light,” as vibrant media art projections lit up the stream.
Guests and participants then explored the immersive media artworks displayed across the stream, nearby walkways, and the Gwanggyo Gallery. Interactive installations provided a multisensory experience, transforming the urban space into a unique art destination.
Cheonggye Soul Ocean is themed 'Emotional Waves Filled with the Charm of Seoul,' aiming to transform Cheonggyecheon into a hybrid space where tourism and art meet. The exhibition spans three zones — the Cheonggyecheon stream, walkways, and Gwanggyo gallery — each offering a different visual experience.
A 40-meter section of the stream features water-based projections that utilize the natural flow of the current, creating a condensed yet emotionally powerful art encounter. Currently on display are five major works: △Haechi’s Water Play △Seoul Landmarks △Mystical Waves: Underwater World △Claude Monet Masterpieces △Full Bloom (滿開)
These pieces reinterpret the identity of Seoul and the unique features of Cheonggyecheon through vivid and engaging visual storytelling.
The Seoul Tourism Organization plans to unveil new artworks each month through the end of the year, ensuring ongoing interest and fresh attractions for visitors.
Kil Ki Yon, President and CEO of the Seoul Tourism Organization, commented, “On the 20th anniversary of the Cheonggyecheon restoration, we’re honored to give new cultural value to this iconic stream. By fusing urban and art tourism, we aim to expand Seoul’s unique tourism content and offer unforgettable experiences to both residents and global visitors.”
