DDP to light up with the sights of Seoul

The exterior of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, almost 220 meters long, will be the giant screen for the first time ever for thousands of images to be projected rom Dec. 20 to Jan. 3. DDP Light festival is organized by the Seoul Design Foundation with an aim to be the representative annual event of Seoul with the late Zaha Hadid creation.

A Turkey media artist Refik Anadol who’s based in LA was invited to lead the inaugural show this year. He previously had a façade project on the exterior of the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. His incorporation of machine learning technology to processing, organizing and configurating thousands of images and data in an innovative way is to be used for this “SEOUL LIGHT” festival. As this year’s title is Seoul Haemong -haemong means dream interpretation in Korea, Anadol specifically will work with archival pictures of the Dongdaemun area as well as the shots of present-day of Seoul submitted by locals.

“The DDP is an incredible canvas, algorithm is a great brush and Seoul’s culture is a great pigment to paint with,” said Anadol during a briefing on Thursday. “From historic calligraphy to the thousands of images collected and Hadid’s architecture, everything has been the inspiration [for this project].”

To make the experience more immersive, the sound representative of Korea such as traditional Korean music, K-Pop, everyday sound on roads are to be accompanied.

The SEOUL LIGHT will be on 4 times every night (at 7, 8, 9, and 10 PM) for 16 minutes, and each one is composed of three parts featuring the past, present, and future of Seoul. Special lighting performances are prepared for Christmas (December 25) and countdown on New Year’s Eve (December 31).

The Seoul Design Foundation’s ultimate goal with DDP SEOUL LIGHT is to develop it into a major attraction comparable to “Vivid Sydney,” an annual festival in Australia that lights up many of the city’s landmarks including the famous landmark, Opera House.
